Government: Tanzania operates under the constitution of 1977, which was modified in 1984. The head of state and chief executive is the president. The president is elected by popular vote for a five-year term. Political parties besides the ruling Party of the Revolution was allowed in 1993 and the first multiparty elections were held in 1995. The republic's legislative body has a 274-seat national assembly. Zanzibar also has its own president and house of representatives, for dealing with internal Zanzibar issues.
