Government: Gambia operated under the 1970 constitution until a military coup in 1994. Later in 1997 the constitution was rewritten. A president who is popularly elected for a five-year term heads Gambia. The unicameral legislature consists of a 49-seat house of representatives; 45 members are elected and 5 are appointed by the president. The country's legal system is based on English common law, Koran law, and customary law. The country is made up of five divisions and one city, the capital.
