Government:
The president, who is nominated by parliament and approved by public referendum for a six-year term, holds executive power. Egypt is governed under the constitution of 1971. The legislature consists of an advisory council and a people's assembly. Political parties based on religion are illegal except the Muslim Brotherhood, the largest religion party, has been allowed to operate at times. The country is divided into 26 governorates.
